This newspaper article ran by Hearst newspaper the New York Journal in the aftermath of the main explosion. this and articles like it were used to infuse the public anger that led up to the war.

"For the great enemy of truth is very often not the lie deliberate, contrived and dishonest but the myth persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Too often we hold fast to the cliches of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."- President John F Kennedy

The quote by President Kennedy describes how the public got so caught up in the sensationalism being reported as news that no one thought to stop for a minute and think, instead of stopping and thinking the people allowed themselves to be used as pawns in to help a business increase profits.
